Newbies Must Know! Principles of Overtaking or Being Overtaken Correctly
Jul 4 , 2020
Accidents caused by overtaking (unsuccessfully) or being overtaken are major causes that should not be overlooked. On two-lane roads with opposing traffic, the main causes may stem from drivers lacking skills and/or driver etiquette (themselves) as primary factors. Subsequent causes may arise from environmental conditions, road conditions or various unforeseen circumstances that drivers need to learn about!

If a driver has sufficient long-distance driving experience, they will know the simple principle: for safe overtaking and being overtaken, when we see a vehicle behind us signal to overtake, we must show courtesy by reducing our vehicle's speed while also signaling back by turning on the left indicator, moving as close to the left lane as possible, to create space for the overtaking vehicle to pass comfortably. As for the vehicle wanting to overtake, once it's safe, it should quickly turn on the right indicator and accelerate to overtake as quickly as possible
With just this simple principle, if all drivers adhere to it, it's guaranteed that accidents and traffic congestion will definitely lessen. Therefore, let driving etiquette start with us. If you know you're driving slowly, only use the left or middle lane. The right lane is reserved for faster vehicles or those in more of a hurry than us
From now on, when driving, frequently check your rearview and side mirrors. Don't play the radio loudly, so you can hear and see other vehicles signaling to pass or honking for the right of way. This way, we can quickly make way for faster vehicles to overtake safely.
It can be seen that overtaking and passing is still considered law* Traffic Act, Type 3, Chapter 2: Overtaking and Passing
Chapter 2 as well
Overtaking and Passing
Section 44(5) A driver intending to overtake another vehicle on a road without designated lanes must signal by flashing the headlights multiple times, or by indicating with the right turn signal, or by sounding a horn loud enough for the driver of the vehicle ahead to respond with a signal according to Section 37 (3) or Section 38 (3), and only when it is deemed not to obstruct other vehicles that are currently overtaking, may they then proceed to overtake.

The principle of safe overtaking and being overtaken is simply this: "The vehicle being overtaken must make way for the overtaking vehicle to pass comfortably, and the vehicle wishing to overtake must complete the overtake in the shortest possible time." That's all.
